Christian Science has been my...

Christian Science has been my only physician, and an expression of my gratitude is long overdue. As a child I was healed of eczema on my face and arms. This healing has been permanent and no blemish remains. Later I was healed in one treatment of asthma through the help of a college roommate, although I had been so ill that I was unable to sit up to study for final examinations. That was twenty-five years ago, and there has never been any recurrence of the asthma.

I am most grateful to my family and to friends who expressed much love during a time when double pneumonia developed into pleurisy. Although faithful work was done at different times by practitioners, the condition became worse. The argument was presented that only surgery could save my life. This I never believed or accepted. If God could not heal me, what had I to gain from material means? My childhood training in our home and in the Christian Science Sunday School had firmly convinced me that God's power is equal to every emergency.

A sentence from our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, was a bulwark to me (p. 463), "A spiritual idea has not a single element of error, and this truth removes properly whatever is offensive." My father often strengthened my thinking. One time when the pain was coming at such regular intervals that I dreaded the next moment, he pointed out that it was material sense, not man, which was in pain. As the image of God, perfect Life, man could not contain "a single element of error." God is the substance of man, who is completely separate from a matter body.
