About three years ago a radio...
About three years ago a radio broadcast broke the news that a plane in which my wife was a passenger had crashed into the Atlantic Ocean with the loss of all aboard. The unexpectedness of the news paralyzed me for the moment; then at once I thought of calling a practitioner to help me. The fact that my wife had been lost appeared irrevocable, and for that interval I accepted it as such. I found myself almost unable to walk to the telephone, for my legs would scarcely function. Progressively the paralysis of fear moved upward to my throat, and by the time I reached the telephone I could barely make my message known to the practitioner.
In an instant the practitioner grasped the situation. I recall his forthright statement that Life is not dependent upon material conditions. Then quietly he pointed out that God is the source of all power and is instantly available and effective to save. He quoted the inspired words by Mary Baker Eddy in "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (p. 210): "Good thoughts are an impervious armor; clad therewith you are completely shielded from the attacks of error of every sort. And not only yourselves are safe, but all whom your thoughts rest upon are thereby benefited." Six hours later I received word that my wife was one of the few passengers who had been saved.
In that moment when every human and intellectual resource was taken from me and I found myself crying aloud for proof of God's power and love, I came to understand that His availability can always be demonstrated and that we need never be deprived of it. These words are a poor and feeble expression of my gratitude for this unfoldment, which I recognize as a demonstration of divine Love, God. Since that hour I have never doubted that every problem, of whatever nature or aspect, will be solved as one grows in an understanding of the allness and power of God as taught in our religion. My gratitude for the work, sacrifice, and inspiration of our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, is beyond expression.—Guiles Deane Davenport, Hastings-on-Hudson, New York.
