RADIO PROGRAM No. 63 - The Remedy for Neighborhood Tensions

Clifford W. Lightfoot

On this program Clifford W. Lightfoot of Los Angeles, California, told of his experience, as follows:

At one time we lived in a neighborhood where a group of teenagers congregated nightly in the street. There was lots of loud talk, and they darted noisily back and forth around the block in cut-down Fords and made themselves an unbearable nuisance. I tried to talk to them but got no results; so finally I reported them to the juvenile authorities.

One evening after I had spent several hours in study of the Bible and the writings of Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, I was prompted to go to a warehouse nearby where I had some machines stored. This took me down a dark alley. Just as I was about to put the key into the lock, I heard the voices of several young men and a girl. They came up behind me, and I knew from the sound of their voices their intentions were far from friendly. I realized that it would not be wise to unlock the door, and did not. The gang leader began to shout angrily at me for reporting them to the juvenile authorities. The others wanted to jump me immediately, but the leader told them to wait. I didn't speak until I felt that God, divine Mind, was directing me. I knew that in a fight I was outnumbered and, moreover, I knew that a fight settles nothing.
