THE CRUCIFIXION AND THE RESURRECTION
One of the striking aspects of Jesus' ministry was his frequent reference to his impending crucifixion and his spiritual preparation for this great demonstration of God-given dominion over matter's claim to reality and life. Luke relates that quite a long time previous to the crucifixion, in the presence of three of his disciples, Moses and Elias appeared to Jesus in his spiritual illumination, and they talked with him about his decease, which would come to pass at Jerusalem.
Now while Jesus' recorded ministry was one of healing and teaching, several other instances are related in the Gospels which show his awareness of this experience which was to come to him and his confident approach to it. Although the Bible states that they failed to understand him, at one time he told his disciples that they were on the way to Jerusalem, where he would be crucified. He knew at that time all that would befall him, for he gave them some of the details of the indignities he would then suffer.
In his discourse on the good shepherd, as related in the tenth chapter of John's Gospel, he said: "As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep. And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd. Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father." Here Jesus definitely and specifically declared that he would lay down his life in order that he might take it again, and then he twice declared that no one could take His life from him, but that he would lay it down of himself, adding that he had this power from his Father.
