I shall never cease to be grateful...

I shall never cease to he grateful to my mother for her steadfast reliance on Christian Science and to my father for his Christian encouragement. These factors, together with weekly instruction by consecrated Christian Science Sunday School teachers, have had a profound influence in my life. This I did not fully realize during my high school and university years, but since that time I have been awakening to these great blessings.

Immediately after graduating from college in 1942, I was called to duty in the United States Navy. As I now look back on my Navy service, it is clear that each step was divinely directed. At the first Navy school I attended I was immediately contacted by a Christian Science Wartime Worker and his wife. My association with these devoted Scientists proved to be the turning point in my life. Through their wise counsel I was lifted from a sense of doubt concerning the power of Christian Science to a desire for a demonstrable understanding of it with which I could help my fellow man.

Soon after this I was ordered to the South Pacific area as the officer in charge of a mine disposal unit. So numerous were the unquestionable proofs of protection, guidance, and healing experienced by my men and me while overseas that it would be impossible to recount all of them here. With great gratitude and humility I relate that during almost two years of overseas duty in deepsea diving operations and the disposal of enemy explosives, not a single man in my outfit was lost or injured.
