Church Dedications
Note: Christian Science churches are dedicated only when free from debt.
The Hinsdale Doings
Hinsdale, Illinois (First Church).
First Church of Christ, Scientist, Hinsdale, officially dedicated its new church edifice Sunday, July 20, 1952, holding services at eleven o'clock in the morning and four in the afternoon. A history of the church was read at each service.
First organized in 1931 by a group of Hinsdale residents, who, up to that time, had been members of First Church of Christ, Scientist, La Grange, the charter members of this church were recognized as a Christian Science Society by The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, Boston, Massachusetts, on September 12 of that year. On the following day, Sunday, September 13, regular Christian Science service and Sunday School were held in the Monroe School Auditorium; Wednesday evening testimony meetings began on September 16. For the next twenty-one years the facilities of Monroe School continued to be used and enjoyed by this church, through the gracious co-operation of the Board of Education.
Then, having fulfilled the requirements as set forth in the Manual of The Mother Church by Mary Baker Eddy, the society was recognized as a branch church in June, 1938, and the name duly changed to First Church of Christ, Scientist, Hinsdale, Illinois.
Soon after its inception, a building fund was started by members of this church, and on July 29, 1947, the vacant property at First and Oak Streets, deemed suitable for their needs, was purchased.
Plans were drawn indigenous to the site, and the building project progressed so that ground was broken for construction on August 28, 1950. On April 24, 1951, the cornerstone was laid.
Built of red brick in full range of color, with white columns and trim and black shutters, the building is a gem of colonial architecture.... Opening services were held on Sunday, March 30, 1952.
Through generous gifts from members and friends, the building fund, begun in 1932, continued to grow, and, as the edifice neared completion, contributions were sufficient to cover the entire cost of the building and all furnishings. Since no Christian Science church may be dedicated until free from debt, this enabled the members of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Hinsdale, joyously to hold dedicatory services Sunday, July 20, 1952.
