"To those leaning on the sustaining...

"To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." So writes our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, in the Preface to "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. vii). It was indeed a day "big with blessings" for me when I first heard about Christian Science. It was presented to me by a neighbor who loaned me her copy of Science and Health at a time when I was in great need. I was suffering from high blood pressure, angina, gallbladder trouble, and other ills.

I had not finished the chapter on Prayer before I realized that this was the religion I had been seeking all my life. I was so enthusiastic that I attended a few Wednesday evening testimony meetings and a Sunday morning service to learn more about this religion. After I had finished reading the book, I realized that I had been healed of the high blood pressure and the angina. I was able to walk for miles and to do chores I had been unable to do before.

With the help of a consecrated practitioner I was healed of the gallbladder trouble in one treatment. This was remarkable to me at that time, because in former attacks, which usually lasted from one to three weeks, I had to have injections of morphine to ease the pain. These healings have all been permanent.

I was so grateful for these healings that I bought a Bible, as well as a copy of Science and Health and a copy of the Manual of The Mother Church by Mrs. Eddy. I started to study these books, to do the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly every morning, and to attend church regularly in order to learn all I could about the law of God as presented to us by Mrs. Eddy.

I heard "the scientific statement of being" (Science and Health, p. 468) read from the desk every Sunday morning, and so I thought it must be important. I pondered each affirmation and each negation. Gradually I became so imbued with its truths that I could see that man is the perfect reflection of God, that all that really exists is perfect God and perfect man.

At one time the ladder on which I was standing broke, and I fell, injuring my back on the iron hinge; the pain was intense. I repeated "the scientific statement of being," and as I pondered it the pain stopped; however, I could not get up from the floor. I then remembered that in that week's Lesson-Sermon appeared the following statement from the Bible (Deut. 33:27): "The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms." I called out to our Father-Mother God to show me the way. I soon found myself on my feet, although I was a trifle shaky. I went to sleep that night and had a good night's rest, awakening next morning perfectly healed.

I am humbly grateful not only for all the blessings and healings my family and I have received through Christian Science, but for the blessings the whole world has received through this Science. I am also grateful for the periodicals and the lectures. Above all I am grateful to God, the Giver of all good.— (Mrs.) Gertrude Duke, Miami Beach, Florida.
