It is with profound gratitude for the great good that Christian Science is doing for the world and with the deepest appreciation of what it has done for our family that this testimony is written.

I had for some years been wandering about aimlessly in what I thought was a cruel, unfriendly world, a world full of fear, greed, malice, sin, sickness, and death. Then Christian Science came to me, befriending, protecting, and teaching me. I was shown a new world, full of joy, happiness, kindness, patience, and love. Christian Science taught me to love my fellow man, to overcome erroneous traits of character, and to find pleasure in doing for others. Through it I gained a better understanding of the Bible, and I learned that I was actually the child of God, made in His image and likeness, and that the understanding of this spiritual fact enables one to heal. I saw that as I claimed this understanding and ability I could demonstrate the healing power of God.

One day, before becoming interested in Christian Science and while playing ball with our children, I felt something suddenly wrong with my back which threw me flat on the ground. I had had pains in my back that had been growing progressively worse for some time. I practically had to crawl into the house, and this so alarmed me that I went to a doctor. He told me that I had arthritis of the spine, as evidenced by an X ray, and that the only thing he could do was to operate, but he said that the condition would probably return later in another joint and that I would always have a stiff back. I was confined to bed and was in such pain that I could not move or rise.
