From childhood I often prayed...
From childhood I often prayed that the Christ, Truth, might come into my life, for although I had had a religious education and sought the Word of God in many doctrines. I had little real understanding and knowledge of Him. I shall always be grateful for the daily reading from the Bible in our family circle, for it gave me the certainty that God is always near, even though it did not teach me how to find Him.
It was not until Christian Science was offered to me by a dear friend that I suddenly saw the light. This spiritual awakening brought a healing of eye trouble. During my first weeks of study of the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health, I read the definition of "eyes" which Mrs. Eddy gives on page 586. I was able to lay aside glasses which I had used continually for about ten years. Previously, when I had tried to put them aside, I had suffered from headaches, This healing occurred twenty years ago. I felt grateful that my prayers were answered in a most practical way, bringing light and understanding.
During World War II we were interned in enemy camps. Our family was separated, and each one could only guess where the other members were. However, I am very grateful to say not only was the sense of separation overcome, but I had great peace through the study of Christian Science. Especially helpful and comforting was my realization of the universal brotherhood of man. Membership in The Mother Church was indeed a wonderful blessing in those days when any contact with the Christian Science organization seemed impossible. Though I could not ask help from a Christian Science practitioner in time of need, I knew that our great Physician, God, is always near to heal and bless. Influenza, coldness, fatigue, weakness, and hunger were overcome, and I was able to work longer than I had ever done before.
