PEACE AND JOY INTACT

At the beginning of the year a student of Christian Science was writing letters to her friends. She wanted to conclude by wishing them a happy and peaceful New Year, but she found herself wondering whether she could do so when conditions in the world revealed war and threats of war as widespread. Could she indeed wish anyone a happy and peaceful year?

Thus challenged, she thought of her own experience and felt humbly grateful that through the teachings of Christian Science she was gaining a realization of peace and joy which was not subject to outward circumstances or conditions and which nothing could disturb. Thus she was able to write, "May you know that joy and peace which no man and no circumstance can take from you."

This concept of peace and joy is based on an understanding of the allness of God and the perfection of man as His image. Several Years before the outbreak of World War II this student had gained a wonderful sense of assurance which has remained with her ever since. One day she had read of war breaking out in another country and of the possibility that it might eventually develop on a larger scale and involve many nations. Right then she declared that divine Love is everywhere and that as the child of Love she dwelt forever under its all-harmonious government. Through the study of Christian Science she had been learning that what we experience is the outcome of the thoughts we are holding in consciousness. She could see, therefore, that when we hold steadfastly to the concept of God as ever-present and omnipotent good, there is no place in consciousness or experience for fear, hate, strife, or war. At that moment she affirmed in deep gratitude and humility, "For me there can never be a war."
