THE SANITY OF MIND

Christian Science reveals the true nature of God and man. We learn that man is the image of God, and as such he is not material, but spiritual. God is One, infinite, individual, indivisible, and eternal. In Christian Science there are seven synonymous terms to express the nature of God. These terms are given by Mary Baker Eddy on page 465 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" where, in answer to the question, "What is God," she writes, "God is incorporeal, divine, supreme, infinite Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, Love." This complete definition of God brings to light the infinite variety of His nature as expressed in the spiritual universe and man.

For instance, if we need to know more about intelligence, then we will pray to understand the nature of God as Mind expressed in spiritual intelligence. Is our need one of stability, poise, decision? Then we naturally turn to God as Principle, or Truth, and realize through spiritual understanding the ever-presence of Truth and it natural expression in man. Does life seem very material? Then we must seek to know God as Spirit and man and the universe as spiritual. The sevenfold definition of the one God given by our Leader covers our every need and when applied will heal and regenerate the human selfhood.

One of the first things we learn in Christian Science is that Mind, God, is One and All. The brain is not the seat of mind, and nerve is not the communicator of sensation or intelligence. This is a very important discovery because the belief in a material creation originating in brain and nerve, or mind in matter, is so prevalent as to appear unalterable until challenged by Christian Science. The Bible clearly shows that Jesus looked higher than to brain as the seat of consciousness, for when the demoniac of Gadara was brought to him the healing was accomplished through spiritual means alone and without the use of drugs or hypnotism.
