Christian Science came into my...
Christian Science came into my experience about fifteen years ago when I needed a satisfying and practical religion. I attended my first Christian Science lecture upon the invitation of a friend, and the happy day that I did so stands out in my thoughts as the beginning of my journey from sense to Soul.
My first healing was of a skin rash on the face. I had consulted a physician, who advised me that a cure would involve experimental dieting and tests of various kinds which would take considerable time. The friend who invited me to the lecture gave me copies of The Christian Science Journal and Sentinel to read. I was greatly inspired by them and decided to call on a practitioner for help. The practitioner lovingly pointed out that it was my thinking rather than my skin that needed cleansing and purifying and that I should live closer to God. With her help and my study of the fifth chapter of Matthew, as well as the chapter on Prayer in our textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, I was healed of the skin blemish in a very short time.
About a year later I noticed a lump on my left breast and became stricken with fear. The practitioner whom I wished to see was out of town; but I was given her address, and I wrote to her asking for help. I received a prompt reply assuring me that I would be helped, that the condition was only the effect of mortal belief, and that I must try to see my true selfhood as the perfect child of God. She referred me to several Bible passages, among which was this one from Hebrews (4:12): "The word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." I was told to study the Lord's Prayer with its spiritual interpretation, given by Mrs. Eddy on pages 16 and 17 of our textbook. Eagerly and earnestly I studied as I had been directed and read articles from the Christian Science periodicals. My fear gradually vanished, and before the practitioner's return, about three weeks later, the healing had taken place. Words are inadequate to express my gratitude.
