OUR HOME

Mary Baker Eddy, our beloved Leader', once spoke of home as "your calm, sacred retreat" (Christian Science Sentinel, Vol. XLIII, p. 881). And in a wonderfully illuminating paragraph on page 58 of her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," she defines "home" with her characteristic perceptiveness. She writes, "Home is the dearest spot on earth, and it should be the centre, though not the boundary, of the affections."

As we seek to enrich our individual concept of home it is most rewarding to explore the many authorized books giving precious glimpses of Mrs. Eddy's manner in her home. We read that she was gracious, compassionately helpful, quick to laugh, alert, intuitive, gentle, and, above all, methodical in her daily study of the Christ Science. Her students testify that a warm sense of hospitality pervaded her home.

Are all who live in our homes or who enter them finding that Godlike qualities are expressed there? Through the study of Christian Science we come to know that home and heaven are interchangeable and that both lie within us. Since this is true, a completely satisfying concept of home is instantly available to each of us. It is not dependent upon another person, another place, or a cycle of events. We can be grateful that this is so, for it means that we can begin at once to enjoy a home that is completely and beautifully furnished with lovely graces, that affords heavenly views in every direction, and that is as functional as it is inspiring, for the atmosphere of spirituality is both practical and joy-giving.
