J. C. Penney in a speech reported
in the Centralia Sentinel, Illinois

The speaker, a mild-mannered, white-haired man of past seventy-five, did not look the part of an industrial tycoon who saw forty million dollars wiped out in the depression years and went seven millions into debt trying to salvage his philanthropic ventures. At the age of fifty-eight he started out again; and he told his audience: "When I finally got back on firm ground, I had so much less, in the material sense, than I had had— but I had gained immeasurably in spiritual wealth, for I had finally turned to God for guidance in all the acts and decisions of my life. ...

"We cannot do the task we have to do without the help of God. We cannot do without faith in Him. We cannot do it without prayer."
