Christian Science was presented...
Christian Science was presented to me during the Second World War at a time when I was greatly in need of something other than the material things which circumstances had led me to believe in. Cynicism and a philosophy based on economics had caused me to feel very impotent and unhappy as far as the world was concerned. I had fallen into the belief that man is the victim of fate.
In the spring of 1943 my fiancée gave me a serviceman's edition of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and I promised to read it during a trip to South America. She was a Christian Scientist and wanted me to know what she believed.
For four years previous to this I had been wearing glasses for reading and close work. I also had been told that I had an enlarged heart condition, supposedly caused by strenuous athletics in earlier years. During the trip I read fifteen pages of Science and Health each day. Quotations from the Bible were sent me by my fiancee, which I also read. I knew that work was being done for my safety because I felt a greater sense of freedom than at any time during the war. Six weeks after I had started to read the textbook I suddenly realized I had not worn my glasses for a month, and my eyes no longer bothered me. We were returning from South America in convoy and were off the coast of Brazil one beautiful moonlight night when the thought came to me that I could read in that light. I had a copy of Science and Health in my pocket, and I opened it. One sentence was outlined in light; it was, "I had no need for glasses." I glanced at the page and saw that it was page 614. I have not worn glasses since. Several years ago I was given an examination by a life insurance doctor, and nothing was said about an enlarged heart. Both of these healings came about from my reading of the textbook. No specific work was done on either condition.
