Rights of Scientists Increasingly Respected

Northern California

Another interesting and eventful year has passed, some events indicating the problems we face in protecting the right of the public to practice Christian Science without legal or other restrictions, and some events recording steps of progress in this protection.

During these twelve months nine superior court judges in seven northern California counties have directed that ten marriage licenses be issued for Christian Scientists without the premarital medical tests. In so doing, these judges have accepted as sufficient cause for such direction the fact that a couple seeking the marriage license relies wholly on Christian Science for healing. In only one reported case has a judge not accepted this fact as sufficient cause.
