Almost from babyhood I had...

Almost from babyhood I had been an invalid because of valvular heart disease and spinal trouble. I could not go to school or take part in any of the usual activities of young people, and as a child and young girl I spent most of my life in bed. My parents did everything possible for me. I was taken to many doctors and had all kinds of treatment, and while there were times when I was much better, there was always a relapse, and I would be very ill again.

During a period when I was fairly well, I married and went to live in the country. It was thought that the country life would do me a great deal of good. For about a year I was considerably better; then, however, I again became very ill. A specialist told me that nothing could be done for me and that I would be an invalid for the rest of my life.

At this point, and as a last resort, my mother decided to investigate Christian Science, of which she had heard from a sister. After a time she asked me if I would have treatment from a practitioner. At first I refused, as I was weary of trying things and had no faith in anything. Eventually and simply out of gratitude to my mother for all she had done for me, I agreed to try Christian Science. I then had my first treatment from a practitioner, although I told her I did not believe it would do me any good. After a short time I had to admit that I certainly felt better, and although still somewhat skeptical, I went on with the treatment. I began to read Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy and to study the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly daily, and I then decided to take up the study of Christian Science seriously and to discard all material remedies.
