Signs of the Times

H. N. Perrin in a letter in the Clifton Parish Church Magazine Bristol, Gloucestershire, England

Have you ever thought how many words there are in the Bible for joy, gladness, happiness? Is there any other book in the world with such a variety of words to express the happiness that can be enjoyed in life? Laughter is a Bible word. God means us to be happy. It is sin that makes sadness—sin, which is separation from God.

The more thoughtfully, the more seriously we take the world situation, the home situation today, the more we need the help of Bible study and meditation to enable us to keep our heads up, our whole attitude cheerful.... When St. John was in exile and all his work seemed threatened, he was granted the wonderful lessons given in the first chapter of the Revelation—God reigning in undisturbed majesty, working His purpose out. When St. Paul was in prison facing martyrdom, ... he wrote the wonderful letter to cheer the Philippians up. "Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice."
