From childhood I attended an orthodox church, later joining a Protestant church in our small community, and although my spiritual experiences during this period were satisfactory, I sometimes wondered if there could not be a greater unfoldment of Truth to the sincere seeker. I knew nothing of Christian Science. Some years later a Christian Scientist who spent the summer in our home lent me the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. From the first sentence I was interested, accepting without question this new-old truth. At the time I was engaged in household duties and could read only for short periods daily. After some days I found myself free from constipation, for relief of which I had used medical remedies since childhood. A sense of exaltation and a joyous glimpse of reality and of the healing power of Truth were mine.
However, some months later I experienced a painful attack of the difficulty, and this time it was accompanied by piles. In the meantime I had made several simpler demonstrations proving the allness of God, which gave me confidence. Although I suffered intense pain for several hours, I clung to the truth and became the victor. Over a period of many years I have used no material remedies. Slight recurrences of this condition were quickly overcome.
While I was teaching near an embarkation camp during the First World War, I began manifesting a peculiar sort of cold. At that time I was attending a Church of Christ, Scientist, in a nearby city. My landlady suggested that I remain home from school, but I had no fear and resumed my duties as usual. As I presented the classwork to the group assembled at the morning period, I suddenly felt all sense of the cold leaving my body. Those with whom I lived remarked on my recovery. I realized what the trouble had been when the local newspaper published an article telling of the many victims of an influenza epidemic.
