My first awakening to the fact...

My first awakening to the fact that Christian Science heals came about through an instantaneous healing of my own. I had been very ill for weeks, and it had been necessary for me to move to my mother's home. She had been feeding me for days, because I did not seem to have the strength to feed myself. I was not getting any better under the doctor's care, and the family decided that if they could only get me to a higher altitude, that might help. They had prepared everything to take me to the mountains the next day when a friend of the family who had heard of Christian Science told my mother that he would gladly pay to have a practitioner come and talk to me, and that if this Science did anything for me, he would be a Christian Scientist from then on. I knew nothing of Christian Science, but because of this man's kindness to us, I consented to let the practitioner come and talk to me. I was sure it could not hurt me.

The practitioner was there about twenty minutes. He asked me several questions, then silently prayed to God. Suddenly I knew I was healed, and I stood up; I had not even sat up for weeks. The practitioner told me to get dressed and have dinner with the family; also to eat anything I wanted, and it would not hurt me.

I dressed and went to my mother. When she saw me, she told me to get back into bed, that I must be out of my mind. I told her that I was quite all right; that I was well, and she must not worry about me. That was at three in the afternoon; I helped prepare the dinner and ate with the family. I was so thin that the skin was very loose. When our friends came to call that evening, I opened the door for them, carrying my son, who was then two years old, and my flesh was solid. They were almost frightened and could hardly believe their eyes.
