Twenty-seven years ago I was...
Twenty-seven years ago I was working as a medical nurse in the United States when I was suddenly stricken with what was termed by five different doctors a malignant disease. An operation was suggested as a temporary cure, and a prominent surgeon was called in. The night before the operation was to take place my sister brought a student of Christian Science to see me. Before saying good night this friend leaned over me and quoting from page 228 of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy said: "Keep in mind that 'there is no power apart from God. Omnipotence has all-power, and to acknowledge any other power is to dishonor God.'" I had always had a strong faith in God and was very fond of the Bible, and when I was alone, these words kept coming into my thought. I felt as though I had been in a dark room, surrounded by shadows and fears, and then a light had come and I could suddenly see. I declared, "Of course 'there is no power apart from God.' "
My healing was instantaneous. This little understanding of Truth gave me a great peace, and I fell asleep. Next morning, although the hospital staff could not understand, I persuaded them to let me go home. I had been four months in bed, but was able to travel by streetcar and ferry to my sister's home. This was my first healing in Christian Science. I then bought a copy of Science and Health and began to study Christian Science. Soon after, I sailed for England to be married, and although there was no Christian Science church or society near at hand, I kept on with my studies. In all these years Christian Science has been my only physician, and many problems of sickness in our family have been met. Our daughter was born with the help of this wonderful truth; and after I had been healed of partial paralysis resulting from an illness, my husband turned entirely to this teaching. That was sixteen years ago.
I am very grateful for class instruction and for membership in The Mother Church and in a Christian Science Society. My one desire is to be a better student of Christian Science and to help others to have this wonderful truth.—(Mrs.) Roberta I. Anderson, Newport, Monmouthshire, England.
