SERENITY

To remain serene under all circumstances, good or bad, peaceful or threatening—even in times of unjust persecution, tribulation, and defamation—is to achieve a high rung on the ladder leading to the ultimate harmony and freedom of men, a freedom gained only as a false sense of self is overcome. In Revelation we read (21:7), "He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son." Self-denial, renunciation of self-will, and an all-inclusive love are requisite to gain the spiritual understanding which delivers one from the bondage of material sense and leads to the recognition of the real man's oneness or unity, with God.

One who thinks of himself as an individual personality separate from God believes he must provide for himself and in doing so use as much will power, shrewdness, and cunning as he can. A poet describes such a one in his struggle for existence thus:
