Through the interest of my wife and daughter in Christian Science, and also through the proof of the healing power of Mrs. Eddy's teachings brought about by a consecrated practitioner, who healed me of pneumonia in about three days, with no convalescent period, I decided to investigate this Science. So I started reading and studying Mrs. Eddy's works. I had been a very heavy drinker and smoker for thirty-three years. In order for me to become a member of The Mother Church, I knew those errors had to be overcome, and through my study of Christian Science they were overcome.

I continued absolute abstinence for seven years from all intoxicants and smoking; then in 1944 I made a big mistake. I took a drink of liquor on a special occasion to be sociable. This is just when I should have thought of Mrs. Eddy's words in her Message to The Mother Church for 1901 (p. 2), "What Jesus' disciples of old experienced, his followers of to-day will prove, namely, that a departure from the direct line in Christ costs a return under difficulties; darkness, doubt, and unrequited toil will beset all their returning footsteps." The truth of this statement was proved in my experience.

After over two years of continual drinking and smoking I became very much disgusted with myself and thought of Mrs. Eddy's statement in Science and Health (pp. 406, 407): "The depraved appetite for alcoholic drinks, tobacco, tea, coffee, opium, is destroyed only by Mind's mastery of the body. This normal control is gained through divine strength and understanding. There is no enjoyment in getting drunk, in becoming a fool or an object of loathing; but there is a sharp remembrance of it, a suffering inconceivably terrible to man's self-respect." I humbly turned to our literature and all of Mrs. Eddy's writings again and have read very little else ever since, I stopped drinking and smoking again about five years ago, and I know that the healing is permanent. This healing could only have been accomplished through Christian Science, with true desire on my part.
