THE HEALING OF SIN

The revelation of Christian Science, given to the world by Mary Baker Eddy, its Discoverer and Founder, is twofold. Its basic teaching is that God, Spirit, who is infinite good, is omnipresent and omnipotent, and that man, His image and likeness, is spiritual and perfect. This fact acknowledged and utilized brings into focus its second point, which is equally important: that evil, God's opposite, is nowhere; hence it is without presence, law, or power. It is wholly unreal, because it is without a cause or creator.

In the Gospel of John we read (1:3), "All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made." Then evil, or sin, must be a belief only, a false mental concept of the carnal mind, a counterfeit mind that claims to be as everywhere present and powerful as the one divine Mind, God. Having no ability, intelligence, or power to act, evil's only hope for expression is to become individualized by this socalled mind's own misconception, mortal man.

How often do we stop to contemplate these facts about sin? We are more apt to contemplate the unreality of discord and disease, because these opposites of Spirit's activity cause discomfort and pain, while sin parades in the guise of pleasure, fulfillment—yes, and sometimes as the demonstration of completeness and true satisfaction. Human consciousness has little desire to investigate something that is keeping it asleep in a pleasant dream, so mesmerized that a supreme effort of moral courage or a sharp experience would be required to break the hypnotic spell.
