KNOWING ONESELF
[Original article in French]
"Henceforth know we no man after the flesh" (II Cor. 5:16). Undoubtedly the Apostle Paul was here alluding to the spiritual nature of man and seeking to bring out the importance of our admitting no other nature as real.
Though the importance of this statement is not doubted by Christianity in general, knowing someone other than "after the flesh" is not a current practice. And the means of making it so seem either entirely unknown or not yet accepted, save by a few.
The teachings of Christ Jesus are nevertheless clear on this subject. It is not possible, for example, that the Master's affirmation, "Before Abraham was, I am," referred to the physical person his hearers could perceive. We must then admit that he knew himself to be the expression of Spirit, or God, in whose image the Bible declares man is made—something about which the flesh knows nothing.
