From early childhood I had been...

From early childhood I had been taught to love God, and I took an active part in church work. When I was a young girl, my mother took up the study of Christian Science. At that time much persecution attended one who withdrew from an orthodox church, and I grew embittered toward churches. This feeling left me with a deep sense of disappointment, and I was groping in the dark for something to satisfy my longings.

When my first child reached Sunday School age, I questioned what to do about it, but decided to place her in the Christian Science Sunday School. She readily grasped the meaning of the Scriptures and often told me things I did not know. Soon after her seventh birthday she was confined to her bed with malaria, and although she insisted she could be healed in Christian Science, burdened with a stubborn sense of false responsibility, and over her protest, I called physicians to attend her. While having medical care over a prolonged period, she received encouragement from her grandmother. After all human means had failed, and at the child's insistence, I called a practitioner, and she was healed overnight. She turned to me the next morning and said, "Mamma, I told you all the time." Surely as Isaiah said (Isa. 11:6), "A little child shall lead them." I shall never forget the impression this made upon me, for I then saw that seeking the truth meant my release from all earthly yearning, doubt, and fear.

My testimony would be incomplete without adding appreciation of Mrs. Eddy for restoring to the world primitive Christian healing. For membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church, and for class instruction, I am grateful.—(Mrs.) Nell H. Johnson, Long Beach, California.
