During the recent war we were in the Netherlands East Indies. From the beginning we were always grateful for Christian Science, because it helped us to lift our thoughts above material evidence to spiritual realities, as Jesus enjoined us to do when he said (Luke 21:28), "Then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh."

When our Army capitulated in 1942, my husband was in military service and would have been made a prisoner of war. But he refused to accept this man-made law because he understood Jesus' words (John 8:32), "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." By this truth he was led to go, in full military dress, to the commander in chief of the enemy forces, from whom he received permission to go home. After he also had obtained permission from his own commander of the Netherlands Army, he came home to me and to our children.

In the four years of the enemy occupation we had to move seventeen times, and we were always led to a place where it was safe for us to be at the time. We always found a shelter—sometimes offered from a most unexpected source. Although we lost all our material possessions at the beginning of the war, when we had to evacuate from Sumatra, our material needs were always provided for. I am grateful for this, because I learned that only spiritual possessions are real and eternal.
