Taking biology in your stride; advanced views on evolution

STUDYING THE TRUE SCIENCE OF LIFE

[Of Special Interest to Young People]

Students of Christian Science who are attending universities and colleges are sometimes not exempted from taking courses in prescribed subjects which conflict with what Christian Science teaches. One such subject is biology, which deals with the so-called organic or physical life of plants, animals, and human beings. It is concerned with the structure of material bodies, the birth, growth, and decay of physical creatures, the causes and nature of disease, the theory of evolution, and kindred topics. The presentation of this material in classrooms and laboratories, as well as in textbooks, is based on the assumption that matter is real and that life is primarily physical.

The Christian Scientist, however, need not be disturbed by having to take such a course, but can regard it as an opportunity for growth in spiritual understanding as he aligns the truths of Christian Science against the false premises and conclusions of physical science. He has been taught that God, Spirit, is All-in-all, and that therefore His creation, which includes all that really exists, is wholly spiritual. All being reflects the one Life, God. There is no other life. Holding to these truths, the student will see the fallacy of the belief that there is life in matter, and he will thus be able to understand the unreality of any theories or hypotheses based on this false belief.

Mary Baker Eddy states in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 282), "The real Life, or Mind, and its opposite, the so-called material life and mind, are figured by two geometrical symbols, a circle or sphere and a straight line." Later, on the same page, she adds: "At no point can these opposites mingle or unite. Even though they seem to touch, one is still a curve and the other a straight line."
