Healed of nervous breakdown by lifting thought from self

When I was growing up, I asked my parents to let me join the church in which I could get the best understanding of God. I went with friends to different churches, but did not get what I was seeking and always liked to read my Bible better than to go to church.

Some years later, when I was left alone with a thirteen-year-old son, my health failed. Months of treatment from doctors followed, and then I was pronounced incurable. The doctors told my family I might pass on any day. One night, between periods of unconsciousness, I repeated many passages from the Bible. I had always believed that God did not send sickness. In the morning the maid on the floor of the hotel, which I owned at that time, opened the door and let in a woman to see me. She and her husband were guests in the hotel. I tried to tell her that I was too sick to talk, but she said: "I know what will heal you. It is Christian Science." I asked if it pertained to God and to the way Jesus taught and healed. She replied that it did. She said that God created all perfect and in order. I knew then that God had sent her to me in answer to my prayers, and immediately I felt that this was the truth. She read to me from the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and called a practitioner to help me. I got up the same day and in three days walked quite a distance to visit the practitioner. I was completely healed and have never had a return of the condition.

I read the textbook and loved it, but later on I learned that this book must be studied. The passing on of my son while he was at college, together with the accumulated burdens of business, caused a nervous breakdown. I sol the business and went to California, where I had two sisters, one a student of Christian Science. The other sister opposed this truth, and she said that unless I called in a doctor, I would die.
