GRATITUDE—THE RECOGNITION OF GOD'S GOODNESS

[Original article in German]

In his first epistle to the Thessalonians the Apostle Paul writes (5:18), "In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you." In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy and in the other writings of our wise and God-inspired Leader we find simple and practical statements regarding true gratitude and its effect in our daily life.

On page 3 of Science and Health Mrs. Eddy writes: "Are we really grateful for the good already received? Then we shall avail ourselves of the blessings we have, and thus be fitted to receive more." A beginner in the study of Christian Science may perhaps ask, "What are these blessings?"

The student learns that God, Spirit, is the only creator, that He is all-inclusive Love, and that He bestows only blessings on His children. Man, as the image and likeness of God, possesses by reflection all the qualities and faculties of the divine Mind. As the sinning or sick mortal clings gratefully to this spiritual fact and becomes aware that the real man partakes now of all good, he rises to the true sense of being. Through this newly won understanding he receives the proof that inharmonious conditions, such as sin and sickness, diminish and disappear.
