ANSWERED PRAYER

The student of Christian Science turns for guidance to his textbooks, the Bible and "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, whenever he is confronted by any situation which seems to need a solution. In the chapter entitled "Prayer" in Science and Health he finds this arresting passage (p. 3): "Shall we ask the divine Principle of all goodness to do His own work? His work is done, and we have only to avail ourselves of God's rule in order to receive His blessing, which enables us to work out our own salvation."

The student may have already given much thought to Biblical promises, promises such as this one expressed by the Psalmist: "The Lord taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation," or the one of the Master, Christ Jesus, recorded by Luke, "Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom." The student may thus have reassured himself that God does not withhold any good thing from His children.

But, however much one may rely on such promises, precious as they are, the student finds them inadequate in his search for an answer to prayer unless he has also an understanding of what Mrs. Eddy has designated "God's rule." This rule is to apply to our human problems an understanding of the already existing harmonious and intelligent relation of God to man and the universe. God and man coexist as perfect Principle and perfect idea. By reflection, man exists because God is.
