LET US BE IN THE BLESSING BUSINESS

We read in Luke's Gospel that the child Jesus, according to mortal belief just twelve years old, was found in the temple in Jerusalem "sitting in the midst of the doctors, both healing them, and asking them questions" (Luke 2:4). Replying to his mother's gentle chiding, he said (verse 49), "How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?"

Upon what a glorious business did this child embark! Was his life not one of continuous service to divine Love and his fellow man? In his every utterance and deed he proved that he was in the business of blessing and healing mankind. Should not the followers of the Master, therefore, rejoice to know that they have found their lifework if they too resolve to be in the blessing business? Never need there be any doubt as to their reason for existing, never a question as to what their real job is to be. No matter what the particular human activity is, the fact remains that man's purpose as God's image is to reflect his Maker's goodness, harmony, and intelligence and thus bring blessing to the whole human family.

As a child, Mary Baker Eddy, like the great Way-shower, felt the call to be about her Father's business. A verse written at an early age discloses one of the first glimpses of her lifework (Poems, p. 60):
