ARE WE DEPENDING ON SPIRIT OR MATTER?

Whatever the period in world history, but especially at this hour, there is need for examining our thoughts and acts to see what we are depending upon for salvation. The advent of Christian Science has placed within humanity's reach the solution for all its problems in its teaching that the permanent meeting of individual and collective needs is in proportion to mankind's comprehension of and reliance upon God. This Science reveals God as infinite Love, omnipotent Mind, eternal Life, irrevocable Truth, and immutable Principle. Such an understanding of Him enables us to confide trustingly in His just and loving disposal of events.

Jesus' parable of the house built upon the rock and the house built upon the sand presents a graphic picture of the fallacy of depending on matter or material conditions. The house "founded upon a rock" may well refer to that consciousness which places complete reliance upon God, Spirit. No storm or deluge of mortal mind's false presentments can shake spiritual understanding. The house built upon the sand may be likened to the thought which depends for its welfare upon matter. Here is no withstanding the winds of error or suggestions of mortal mind, because matter affords no stable, immutable foundation.

A mental searching to determine where one's reliance is placed, and what his objectives are, is always helpful to the student of Christian Science. Let us ask ourselves honestly, Are we consulting the material body as to its conditions of health or sickness? If so, are we not making matter our master instead of being master over it? Mary Baker Eddy, our beloved Leader, writes in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 120), "Health is not a condition of matter, but of Mind."
