It was my happy privilege to...
It was my happy privilege to grow up in a home where all the writings of Mary Baker Eddy and the authorized literature of The Christian Science Publishing Society were available to those who wished to read them, and where attendance at the Christian Science Sunday School was taken as a matter of course. This latter circumstance I now consider the greatest blessing of my life.
Christian Science came to me when, as a small child, I was badly crippled following an attack of infantile paralysis which had not only incapacitated me, but had left a condition that was becoming progressively worse. The last physician consulted by my father said after examining me: "When they reach this stage, they usually live three months. If your daughter lives beyond that time, she will be a hopeless cripple physically and, I fear, mentally." That same day an aunt of mine recommended to my parents that they try Christian Science, and this they agreed to do.
The next day my mother took me to a practitioner, and she continued to do this daily for about three months. My parents immediately started to do everything they could to assist the practitioner by daily reading the Lesson-Sermon found in the Christian Science Quarterly, attending all church services, and constantly expecting the promised healing. During this time there was no apparent change in my condition, and I can never be grateful enough for the fact that my parents continued to have help in Christian Science even though I did not seem to be physically benefited. One day the practitioner, sensing the great affection I had for my father, asked me, "Do you think that your father wants you to be this way?" I was so sure of my father's love that the question seemed utterly preposterous to me, and the only answer possible was a very vigorous "No!" Then, with a true sense of inspiration, she told me about God and showed Him to me as the Father of all of us. She made me realize that because God is Love, He could never have created a crippled state, and because He had not created it, it could not be. She gave me loving assurance that I could be as sure of God's care as I was of my father's, and that God is infinitely powerful to sustain me in a perfect condition.
