WHY NOT PERSIST?
To the beginner the study and application of Christian Science sometimes appear to be a tremendous undertaking. Even to some who are not beginners, spiritual progress may seem to be negligible and the possibility of satisfactory attainment dubious. But the one who has begun this study and glimpsed, even though dimly, the rich reward of peace, health, and happiness obtainable through faith, understanding, and demonstration will be irresistibly impelled to keep on, till, through the simple demonstration of healing, the ultimate goal of eternal life is sighted. Seeking Truth righteously and patiently waiting on God, consistently and persistently pressing on, whether progress be fast or slow, refusing to be discouraged, one is certain of success.
To the student just starting the study of Christian Science, as well as to the one further along in understanding, may come aggressive arguments of inability, lack of time, lack of desire, lack of right environment, and others tempting him to be discouraged in his demonstration of the truth. Such is the seeming tenacity of mortal mind. Then must the seeker after Truth be even more tenacious in his efforts to understand Christian Science. Our divinely inspired Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, says in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 462), "Whoever would demonstrate the healing of Christian Science must abide strictly by its rules, heed every statement, and advance from the rudiments laid down." Then she lovingly encourages the student thus: "There is nothing difficult nor toilsome in this task, when the way is pointed out; but self-denial, sincerity, Christianity, and persistence alone win the prize, as they usually do in every department of life."
Through the glorious life and example of Christ Jesus the way is pointed out. In the Bible and our Leader's writings the rules are available to all, statements of truth which meet every situation are provided and the rudiments laid down. The need, then, is for "self-denial, sincerity, Christianity, and persistence." And anyone who will, can persist in an honest, unremitting effort to be more Christlike by denying a material sense of self and claiming the spiritual sense of man in God's likeness.
