HUMILITY

The world has always needed nobility and selflessness in character. Any individual who willingly, intelligently, and lovingly serves his country or a righteous cause with no thought of self-aggrandizement is giving his highest and best to mankind.

The desire to strengthen his character may be the first incentive that awakens the beginner in Christian Science to the need of seeing his true selfhood as God's likeness. He may have recognized something of his so-called human shortcomings and limitations before turning to the study of our inspiring textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, but even a casual perusal of this remarkable book stirs an urge for spiritual development.

The perfect example that comes to thought in connection with an exalted character is the life of our great Master, Christ Jesus. In her writings Mrs. Eddy points out the outstanding quality in the unparalleled character of the Saviour which gives the keynote to the only sure road to greatness—meekness, or humility. A dictionary defines "humility" as "freedom from pride and arrogance;" and someone has written of humility, "It is the mark of nobleness to volunteer the lowest service, the greatest spirit only attaining to humility."
