The Apostle Paul in his epistle to the Romans many centuries ago said (Rom. 8:2). "The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death." In my experience of forty months' military service I have seen this statement proved true. I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, and my primary and advanced training periods were spent at various camps throughout this country and overseas.

Attendance at branch church services in near-by localities, as well as the daily study of the Lesson-Sermon, enabled me to meet and overcome the aggressive mental suggestions that assail every soldier. The truth of the following words of our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, has been revealed more clearly to me during the last few years than ever before: "Undisturbed amid the jarring testimony of the material senses, Science, still enthroned, is unfolding to mortals the immutable, harmonious, divine Principle,—is unfolding Life and the universe, ever present and eternal" (Science and Health, p. 306).

In January, 1944, the Fourth Marine Division, of which I was a member, left the States and successfully invaded the Marshall Islands, Roi-Namur area, with a very low rate of casualties. Early in May of that year our division, together with another, left our bases in the Central Pacific, and in June invaded the islands of Saipan and Tinian in the Marianas. While en route to our destination and after a week of intensive maneuvers, our convoy of LST's put in at Pearl Harbor for water and supplies. About fifteen of our LST's were tied up together in one group, and it was here on a Sunday afternoon that a terrific explosion took place aboard a ship in the inside tier. This was rapidly followed by many other explosions, owing to the presence of high-test gasoline, ammunition, and oil. The fires and explosions continued for many hours, during which our LST together with some others made a successful escape from this inferno of destruction. I have always felt that our protection was due to the fact that just prior to the explosions I had completed studying my Lesson-Sermon and had done definite metaphysical work for protection.
