Church Dedications

Note: Christian Science churches are dedicated only when free from debt.

The members of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Gisborne celebrated a happy event on Sunday, April 21, 1946, when their church building was dedicated.

The cornerstone of the present church at 202 Childers Road was laid at a simple ceremony on July 25, 1936. The building is erected on one end of the land, thus leaving a space for a larger edifice in the future. In the meantime, the well-kept grounds are an asset to the road on which the church is situated.

The beginning of the Christian Science movement in this district dates back to 1914, when a few local residents became interested in this religion and held services in private homes. In 1924 a student group was formed, and services were held in the Masonic Hall, Childers Road. In 1932, with an increase in growth, better accommodation was necessary and a move was made to the old Regent Hall. In the same year the group was recognized as a branch of The Mother Church. The opening of the present building took place on October 11, 1936.—The Gisborne Herald.
