In deepest gratitude to God for...

In deepest gratitude to God for having been brought up in Christian Science, and for the unfailing protection and direction which Science has given me, I submit this testimony.

Some time ago, my wife and I were awakened in the middle of the night by the smell of smoke, and looking out of the window, saw a building on the other side of the road on fire. Almost immediately there was a terrific blaze covering half a block of buildings and sparks were flying onto the roof of our house. A fierce wind was blowing in our direction as we left the house and watched the fire from the street. There we saw two other Scientists and exchanged a few words of encouragement.

Although roofs in these parts are made of wooden shingles, I would not accept the suggestion that our house, too, would catch fire. I declared that the spiritual idea of home is forever intact and safe, and the verse from Isaiah assured me of protection (Isa. 43:2): "When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee."
