Progressive Steps

We had an attractive Reading Room in our church edifice located in a residential neighborhood, but the room was seldom used. It was open in the afternoon for two hours and a half, three days a week. However, many members felt that we should move the Reading Room to a location where we would be in closer contact with the public and with our own members as well. After due consideration the church membership decided to move the Reading Room to the second floor of a building on the main street of our town of about four thousand people. In order to serve the community in a larger way, we increased the time when the Reading Room is open to the public.

Just prior to the move we were ordering two copies of The Christian Science Journal each month and sold two; four copies of the Christian Science Sentinel each week and sold two; two copies of The Christian Science Monitor daily and sold two a month. Today, two years later, we order ten Journals monthly and sell all of them; ten Sentinels weekly and sell all; two Monitors a day and sell eighteen a month. We find a marked increase in the subscriptions taken to these periodicals, including The Heralds of Christian Science. We have more than doubled the sale of the Christian Science Quarterly, and we are increasing our order on these the next time.

Before the move to a more advantageous location, we averaged sixteen visitors a month. In recent weeks the number has increased to approximately ninety. We feel that this progress has come because of our desire to meet the human need, and we are grateful to the church membership, whose thought was awakened to the progressive steps which would benefit others and better serve the Cause of Christian Science.
