This Thy Brother
A Student of Christian Science who was selling a useful commodity on a commission basis once found himself in what is termed a sales production slump. A feeling not only of discouragement and dissatisfaction, but of resentment as well, crept into his thinking. One day, while he was seated at his desk, the sales manager entered the salesmen's office to write on the blackboard the amounts of the day's sales made by the successful agents, together with their names. Again the student was tempted to feel envious and resentful, but this time he was alert to detect the erroneous suggestions. He immediately reversed these thoughts, recognizing the opportunity that was his to declare his gratitude for his brother salesmen's success. He rejoiced to know that God's bounty is for all, and silently expressed his deep thankfulness that these particular men had proved in their business the present availability of divine Love's supply.
At once, and without any special effort on his part, the student's sales improved, and they continued to advance in a satisfying degree. This experience also marked a step forward in his understanding of the fact that there is no profitless inactivity when one is reflecting God.
You and I are free to draw upon God for all we need, every minute of each day. His supply is entirely good and satisfying; it has never been wasted or depleted; it is spiritual, and it is ample for all. The writer gained new light on how we may avail ourselves of this supply from Jesus' parable of the prodigal son, found in the fifteenth chapter of Luke. Here it is related that the younger son, the prodigal or spendthrift, had gathered together and taken to "a far country" his substance and there wasted it. But, coming to himself, he said with humility and contrition, "I will arise and go to my father."
