On page 14 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy writes: "Entirely separate from the belief and dream of material living, is the Life divine, revealing spiritual understanding and the consciousness of man's dominion over the whole earth. This understanding casts out error and heals the sick, and with it you can speak 'as one having authority.'" The truth of these words was proved to me in an early experience I had.

I was suffering from chronic inflammation of the stomach, with occasional acute attacks, the result of ptomaine poisoning.

At the time I turned to Christian Science for enlightenment and healing, I was in the service of a short-line railroad as a station agent in a small town. Several years before, when I first entered the service, there had been a disastrous wreck of an excursion train on the road. The railroad paid all just claims, incurring such a large indebtedness that it was unable to maintain standard wages. So it had seemed necessary for me to get along with an incompetent station force. This state of affairs led to complaints from the public, official censure, and bitter, resentful thinking, which I believed to be righteous indignation, on my part.
