Safety in His Service

Sometimes the suggestion is voiced that if one is engaged in serving the church in a position of some importance, he is the object of evil thoughts and forces which endanger his safety. Such an assertion cannot stand thoughtful analysis. The very reverse of it is true. By serving God, by aligning one's thought and life with the divine will and purpose, by being obedient to the Father's call, we draw near to Him, realize more of His all-embracing presence, and find that safety and security which can be found only through conscious unity with good.

If serving God brings penalty, then indifference to God, or serving evil, would be the logical way to security. But every believer in God knows this is not true.

The important thing for the one active in God's service—be he a practitioner, teacher, lecturer, Reader, church member on a board or committee—is to watch his own thoughts. He should make sure from day to day that he does not let any least negative suggestion that he can possibly be a target for evil lodge in his consciousness. Such suggestions produce false fears on which evil would build up its claim to have power to confuse or adversely affect him in his righteous work. Let him ask himself: Can man be both son of God and the target for evil? Can God permit even a momentary encroachment by evil on His witness or representative? Is God All-in-all and evil therefore no thing, or are both God and evil something?
