"There is lifting up"

"When men are cast down, then thou shalt say, There is lifting up; and he shall save the humble person." The twenty second chapter of Job abounds in such gems of thought as this. As one opens his Bible, many times at random, and comes upon some spiritual treasure, he is reminded of Mary Baker Eddy's words in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 363), "The Bible is the learned man's masterpiece, the ignorant man's dictionary, the wise man's directory." Then our prophetic Leader adds, "I foresee and fore say that every advancing epoch of Truth will be characterized by a more spiritual apprehension of the Scriptures, that will show their marked consonance with the textbook of Christian Science Mind-healing, 'Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.'"

How safe one feels when he walks intimately with these two precious books—these two witnesses of Truth! Would a Christian Scientist contemplate so much as a day's journey on the road of human experience without their guiding, healing, protecting companionship?

Before our family had found Christian Science and had learned to turn to the Great Physician alone in times of physical distress, certain spaces in our home resembled a small apothecary shop. No heathen shrine contained more altars to false gods than our medicine-laden shelves. Apparently we never expected more of these material remedies than temporary relief, for we would assiduously lay in a goodly supply of drugs to subdue future pains and ailments. When my father would leave on a business trip, at least one half of his portmanteau would be reserved for material potions, to handle anything from sniffles to snakebites! He was prepared for any eventuality, and seldom was entirely disappointed.
