What Is the Basis of All Health?

In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," the author, Mary Baker Eddy, has written (p. 339), "The basis of all health, sinlessness, and immortality is the great fact that God is the only Mind; and this Mind must be not merely believed, but it must be understood."

This is a startling statement, to the world's sense of things, educated as it is to think of health as allied not to any fact about God but to physiological, biological, and chemical factors. Sinlessness also, is believed to be allied in large measure to human efforts after goodness. But the logical import of the words quoted is that health and harmony can only be obtained in proportion to our understanding of God as the one Mind or intelligence. This is further confirmed by another very direct sentence from the textbook (p. 390): "It is our ignorance of God, the divine Principle, which produces apparent discord, and the right understanding of Him restores harmony."

All health, therefore, is vested in Mind. So-called matter is not a factor in divine metaphysics; it has no bearing on the question whatsoever. This is entirely in accord with the words of Christ Jesus to his disciples (John 6:63), "It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing."
