Nineteen years ago, after two...

Nineteen years ago after two physicians had diagnosed my difficulty as "valvular leakage of the heart and weak, infected lungs," and had said, as I learned later that my condition was hopeless, Christian Science came to me with its healing message about man's true relationship to God. I am a living witness to the truth of Mrs. Eddy's statement in Science and Health (p. 425), "Correct material belief by spiritual understanding and Spirit will form you anew."

Up to that time human experience had led me to believe that because tuberculosis had prevailed in our family for at least two generations, I was unwelcome in society. When I was seven years old I was invited to attend a party given by one of my playmates. It was my first party, and it seemed like a dream as we sat in a circle around the room waiting to be greeted by our little hostess's mother. On learning that I was the daughter of the man at the end of the block who was supposed to have consumption, she hastily ordered me from the house.

As time went on I married and had two children. My husband was completely healed in Christian Science of black erysipelas. Our son, whose employer insisted upon his being examined by a physician when he was seized with sudden pains while at work, was advised to have an immediate operation for appendicitis. They sent him to a second physician, who diagnosed the condition as acute. He was at the time a Sunday school pupil, and he told his employer that his parents were Christian Scientists and would not consent to the operation. He was advised that he need not return to work unless this was done. It was during the depression in the early thirties, and jobs were very scarce, so the boy insisted that I consent to his seeing a third physician.
