Not Trying to Man
A Student of Christian Science, who was struggling with a sense of injury and injustice because of an experience involving human relationships, poured out her troubles to a Christian Science practitioner. The practitioner listened patiently and understandingly. The troubled one concluded with the words, "It has been very trying."
The practitioner turned to her and asked with gentle firmness, "Trying to what?" Without waiting for a reply, she continued: 'Certainly it has been trying to the beliefs of self-pity, self-righteousness, pride, self-justification, self-love, and so on. It has been very trying to mortal mind. But not to man!"
"But not to man!" What a startling thought! The sense of injury and injustice had not been trying to man because, in reality, it had never happened to him. Man had never been in this unhappy picture, had never been through any trying experiences, and had never been touched by them. Man had never been injured misused, or imposed upon. Man, the beloved child of God has always been in the loving Father's presence and safe in His care. With the realization that it was mortal mind, not man, that was suffering, the student felt the sense of distress leave her and she was free.
