The Necessity for Working Together

Learning to work together toward a common objective is one of the great problems that face the world today. A long step forward has been taken by the fifty nations formally declaring their intention of adhering to the United Nations Charter consummated in San Francisco. The framework has been erected, and now the nations must work together and prove its effectiveness.

Its high moral objectives hint spiritual truths which have always existed, and which mankind now better appreciates. In Ecclesiastes (1:9) we read, "And that which is done is that which shall be done." The meaning of this phrase becomes clear when it is read in the light of a statement made by Mary Baker Eddy in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 260): "Science reveals the possibility of achieving all good, and sets mortals at work to discover what God has already done."

The problem is for individuals to attain spiritual consciousness, and for nations to achieve a spiritual viewpoint. It is apparent that if individuals work together in harmony the same result will be attained collectively. One may question why it is necessary to work with others as along as one is himself advancing spiritually. The ability to work in harmony with others toward a common objective is one proof of an individual's spiritual progress. To work successfully together requires the demonstration of those Christlike qualities that made Jesus the great Master. Should we not, therefore, place ourselves constantly under the necessity either to prove our advancement or to uncover and destroy those things that would impede that advancement?
