In 1932, when the stock market...

In 1932, when the stock market crashed, we lost most of our money; then the banks failed and we lost all our savings; next a building and loan association failed and we lost the mortgage payments on our home. On top of all this, my husband, who is in the financial business, had his salary cut a hundred per cent, and made no commission in nine months. At this time also our baby son was taken ill with streptococcic glands and was to undergo an operation.

Although I had had no business training, I decided that possibly I could sell something to help out. One afternoon I went to sell some things to a woman who is a member of a Christian Science church, although I did not know it at the time. I was so desperate that I broke down in her home and told her my troubles. She asked me if I knew about Christian Science. I told her I did not; so she kindly gave me some copies of the Sentinel. I read them nearly all that night and realized that I had found the solution to all my problems. I was directed to a practitioner, who lovingly took up the work for my baby. No operation had to be performed, for in two weeks he was perfectly well.

Finally we were down to our last five dollars, and I even fainted from hunger. Then I realized that although five dollars would not help a family of five much in a material way, it might help in a spiritual way, so I bought a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy with my last cash. When I got home I picked up my Bible to do the Lesson, and opened to Deuteronomy 8:3: "He humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, ... that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the Lord."
