Sealing the Victory

So much has been planned for the postwar era that one needs to maintain a well-balanced attitude or he may be led to believe that the discomforts of the war years will be followed by material ease and abundance for all, free from troublesome responsibilities and vexing problems.

Mary Baker Eddy, the inspired Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, in a statement pertinent to the times, explodes any assumption that human triumphs are signals for rest from spiritual endeavor, for she says significantly (Christian Healing, p. 1): "History repeats itself; to-morrow grows out of to-day. But Heaven's favors are formidable: they are calls to higher duties, not discharge from care; and whoso builds on less than an immortal basis, hath built on sand."

The cessation of war and the return to peacetime normalcy are causes for greatest gratitude and rejoicing. And we rejoice in the many new discoveries and inventions which will make the details of living more enjoyable and facile. But the teachings of Christian Science make it clear that mankind's peace and harmony are insecure as long as the standard of living is based on matter per se. For belief in materiality, which fosters the belief in minds many, with resulting strife and friction, is the fundamental cause of war. It must then be repudiated on the basis that since God, good, is Spirit, and Spirit is All, there is no place for matter or evil; hence its unreality.
